Established in 1991, Chrysalis Enterprises provides a transitional jobs program to clients who face the greatest barriers to employment. Transitional employment offers our clients the opportunity to gain real-world skills, build confidence, earn a paycheck, and develop the experience needed to find and retain long-term employment. Clients working a transitional job are in an important stage of their individual transformation, which is highlighted in the interview below:

We recently sat down for a Q&A with Christian, a Chrysalis client working a transitional job providing street maintenance in the Figueroa Corridor area of Downtown Los Angeles.

Chrysalis: What brought you to Chrysalis?

Christian: I was living in a transitional house, and they referred me to Chrysalis where I met with my Employment Specialist. She helped me out a lot. When I heard about Works, I was really proactive in getting hired. I wanted to start working again since I had been unemployed for a while. My first BID was Leimert Park, which was a good BID, but I was only working three days. Now I’m working Figueroa Corridor five days a week.

Chrysalis: What do you like about your transitional job?

Christian: The fact that I could be employed at the moment while I’m transitioning to another job. Chrysalis Works helped me out a lot because I was financially unstable, I had no money to my name at all, and Works helped me get back on my feet. It lets me have a secure, solid job and secure income coming my way while I work my way up to what I really want to do.

Chrysalis: What kind of jobs are you looking for?

Christian: I’m a bit all over the place with that because I’m just eager to work. I’m really interested in working at the airport or getting my guard card to be a security guard. I’ve also been dabbling with the idea of truck driving.

Chrysalis: What makes you a great employee?

Christian: I have good people skills, and I like to work. I don’t want to show up to work and have nothing to do at all. I also have strong communication skills with others, and I’m a team player.

Chrysalis: Do you have a favorite inspirational quote?

Christian: Not necessarily, although my inspiration comes from the fact that I can’t waste time anymore. I’m trying to make up for the time I’ve already lost, and that’s pretty much my inspiration. I remember where I came from and I don’t want to go back, I really don’t.

Chrysalis: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey?

Christian: Just that Chrysalis is really helpful. It really, really is. You guys always come through. When I needed hygiene items when I was on the street and didn’t have anything, you guys came through. You gave me a lunch and helped me with some clothes.

I’m happy I can say to anyone “I know where Chrysalis is at and they have a whole lot of resources you can utilize.”

I honestly don’t know what I’d be doing at this moment or where I would be if it wasn’t for Chrysalis. Really.

Chrysalis: Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. We can’t wait to see what’s next for you.
