Mission:
Chrysalis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged and homeless individuals become self-sufficient through employment opportunities. Since our start in 1984, we have helped over 35,000 individuals change their lives through jobs.

Sites:
Chrysalis' three main service centers are located where homelessness and pockets of poverty are most pervasive: on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and in the Pacoima area of the San Fernando Valley.

2009 Highlights:

•  We assist over 3,000 individuals each year through our employment programs and services.

•  Over 40% more people sought our services since the economic downturn. 400 clients a day received services at one of our three centers.

•  Last year, over 1,500 clients were successfully employed.

•  The average cost of our program is $2,000 per client /year – a fraction of the cost of similar government-sponsored employment programs.

•  On average, our clients make almost $10 an hour when they gain employment, considerably higher than California's $8 hourly minimum wage.

•  91% of funds raised went directly to client services .

•  Over 14,000 hours were volunteered to provide our clients with important aid in their job search and assistance with special events.

Creating Jobs:

Chrysalis Enterprises: Our social enterprise business unit creates transitional jobs as an effective stepping-stone to the working world: they deliver marketable experience and job skills and allows clients to rebuild confidence and develop good professional habits.

Chrysalis Works, a professional street maintenance service, provides skills and experience in maintenance and recycling; and Chrysalis Staffing, a temporary staffing agency, allows clients to reenter the job market through short- and long-term temporary work assignments.

  • Through Chrysalis Enterprises, nearly 550 clients participated in on-the-job training and are now on their way toward permanent, outside employment.
  • $2.5 million in wages was earned by clients working through Chrysalis Enterprises.
  • Chrysalis Enterprises created 220,000 hours of employment in 2009.
  • Chrysalis Enterprises cleaned the streets for over 100 of the busiest blocks in Los Angeles each month.

Our Clients :

The men and women who turn to Chrysalis often have multiple barriers to finding employment and have nowhere else to go.

  • 100% of our clients are homeless and/or low-income individuals
  • 52% of our clients have not received a high school diploma or GED
  • 46% are ex-felons and 70% have been incarcerated
  • 70% have participated or are participating in substance abuse programs
