CHRYSALIS AND MACERICH ANNOUNCE A WORKING PARTNERSHIP IN SANTA MONICA

(Los Angeles, California) - - Chrysalis, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit dedicated to employing homeless and economically disadvantaged adults, today announced a working partnership with the Macerich Company, a Santa Monica-based REIT that owns interests in 76 regional malls nationwide and 20 regional malls in California, to provide cleaning services for its Santa Monica Place mall property.

Councilmember Bill Rosendahl, City of Los Angeles, 11 th District, gave context to the problem of homelessness. "The bottom line is that 'homelessness' is a big issue in the City and County of Los Angeles, and all of us need to focus our attention on this pressing problem with the same determination that has been given to other issues of significance," Rosendahl explained. "There is an estimated 91,000 homeless people in Los Angeles County (LA Homeless Services Authority) so the problem is not going away. In fact, homelessness is just getting worse. But today, I am encouraged by the announcement of the working partnership described by Chrysalis and Macerich to help homeless adults gain self-sufficiency and reintroduction into the work place. Now is the time for all of us to come together and work together to find solutions for the economically disadvantaged."

“Our organization's philosophy is that a steady job is the single most important step in a person's transition to long-term self-sufficiency and we simply could not accomplish that task without companies like Macerich that are willing to work hand-in-hand with us to make it a reality,” stated Adlai Wertman, President and CEO of Chrysalis.

“Santa Monica has been our company's home for more than 20 years and to have the chance to participate in a program that provides individuals with an opportunity to regain their self-sufficiency is truly gratifying,” stated Art Coppola, President and CEO, The Macerich Company.

Chrysalis provides critical employment services to nearly 2,300 homeless and impoverished individuals annually through its centers based in downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica and in the San Fernando Valley. Services include job preparation classes covering finding job leads, the job interview process, completing applications and preparing a resume.

For those with the most barriers to employment, Chrysalis provides more than 800 individuals each year in temporary apprenticeships through their maintenance and staffing businesses. These programs help individuals develop their skills and gain work experience that will eventually help them secure a job in the private sector. Currently, 93% of individuals completing Chrysalis's program secure employment.

Chrysalis has been recognized for its innovative approach to helping homeless individuals become self-sufficient through employment opportunities. “ Most people escape homelessness by reconnecting with an income," said Daniel Flaming, president of the Economic Roundtable, a nonprofit research group. "What Chrysalis is attempting to do is absolutely critical for helping people escape homelessness, prevent homelessness and prevent relapses of homelessness.”

The Macerich Company is a fully integrated self-managed and self-administered real estate investment trust, which focuses on the acquisition, leasing, management, development and redevelopment of regional malls throughout the United States. The Company is the sole general partner and owns an 81% ownership interest in The Macerich Partnership, L.P. Macerich now owns interests in properties totaling approximately 77 million square feet of gross leaseable area consisting primarily of interests in 76 regional malls.
