Writing Empowerment Program takes center stage!

December 2, 2016

“I was planning to take my life but this class opened my heart beyond my darkness and despair and has given me tools to tap into the gifts that lay dormant within me. It’s showed me the greatness that was always there. Now I’m unstoppable.”

– Norma

Last night, a beacon of hope burned brightly as Chrysalis clients took center stage with Urban Possibilities at the group’s Writing Empowerment Program graduation performance. Funded by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission (LACAC) with support from the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, the program is a 12-week course that uses writing and performance to help job seekers, learn new skills, tell their stories, and inspire audiences in the process.

Since 2013, Chrysalis has teamed up with Urban Possibilities to offer this program, which uses the arts to help clients release the trauma of their past and create a new narrative for their lives. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, effective communication, team-work, creativity, discipline, self-efficacy and excellence – all skills that improve employment prospects and help Chrysalis clients land jobs.

“Living on Skid Row I watch people who have given up every day and I was throwing in the towel too. This program has made me feel empowered with renewed confidence and ready to face life with new energy. It showed me when people come together in a spirit of creativity we can move mountains of heartache and pain. Now I’m excited for what’s ahead. Thank you so very much.”

– James

The students graduating from the program all performed a piece of original work before a live audience. This special evening of poetry, performance, and prose is the result of preparation and expert coaching from Urban Possibilities’ team of theatre professionals as well as teaching artists from the Geffen Playhouse, an Urban Possibilities partner.  At the end of the evening, the crowd lined up to congratulate the graduating clients and to have books of the group’s work signed.  This opportunity for dialogue between performers and audience members of all walks of life is a moment to be remembered!

What the audience said…

“The show was phenomenal! I am so grateful that programs like this exist – truly a testament to the power of art to heal and empower. Thank you for sharing your voices with us tonight. I will never forget it.”
– Audience member

“Phenomenal! . . . Such a deeply moving experience. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have witnessed this event.”
